Writers tend to spend a lot of time sitting on their fannies. They also tend to spend a lot of time battling what is commonly referred to as Writer’s Block. But as luck would have it, the practice of yoga is an ideal method for banishing both writer’s butt and writer’s block!
An author and a yogi, I developed Yoga for Writers to help writers of all fitness levels benefit from the incredible creative power of yoga. The practice of yoga goes back centuries, but did you know that the physical asanas, the poses, were only created as an aid to meditation?
These asanas were originally developed to exercise the human body in a manner that would allow it to sit for hours on end in meditation. Through movement and breath work, practicing asana before meditating gave ancient yogis the strength and endurance to park it on their behinds for hours at a time. So you see, those old guys were all very familiar with writer’s butt, they just didn’t call it that.
But a yoga practice does more than just keep you physically fit. It also unlocks the mind, opening it up to new ideas and clearing the clutter that often blocks creative thinking. When combined with breath work, the rhythmic dance of asana allows the practitioner to unwind and relax. Linking the postures with every inhale and exhale, the writer’s mind is freed up from the demands of daily life, and inspiration has room to bloom.
